Wilde Relatives/Genealogy

topic posted Sat, August 20, 2005 - 4:17 PM by  Patrick
Hi, I've just found this tribe and haven't had much of a chance to look around. Yet I assume this is a good place to find folks who are wild about Wilde. Ok, strike that.

My father's mother's maiden name is Wilde, and my 87 year old aunt just informed me that we're related to Oscar. Not sure why I hadn't heard it sooner. I've searched a bit for some genealogy regarding the man online with little success.

If anyone has details on his descendants in America I'd greatly appreciate it.

thanks

    Oscar Wilde's two (male) children, Merlin and Vyvyan, along with Oscar's wife Constance, changed their last names to Holland when they moved to the continent. As far as I can tell they never changed their last names back to Wilde. So in order to trace his genealogy, you'd probably need to look to the Hollands and not the Wildes. (Of course, you may be related in some other way, and not directly descended from Oscar).

    Hope this helps!

      Thanks so much. I'll pass this along to my relatives. If there's truly a connection it's probably a distant cousin situation, definitely not a direct descendant.

      I do know that his grandson is the keeper of the flame. I've tried to find a way to contact him and may write his publisher.

      thanks again

    Well...Oscar's father was a known womanizer. And he had a full-blood brother named William. I'm not sure if William had children, but if he did they would likely have had the surname "Wilde".

    I believe the father was of Scandinavian origin, but the way.

    "...not sure why I just heard about it...."
    lol keep searching & you'll find out
    someone'll be proud of the connection }}}

    I too was looking for my grandmother & any family not even considering they were of historical value or connection & I would receive notes (e-mail) that siad "...oh we can't talk about that......" I was What!! It has been a hundred years hello but there were people still either sworn to privacy or modesty that they would not reveal family gossip/history LOL
    Was I shocked to find out that the 'truth' of my fathers mothers family was a lot more fantastical then the story he had made up to cover up his father gambling away his mom's ranch in Denver in the worst winter in history there! Discovering familys palces in history, however remote or everyday I think is a fabulous way to become connected to humanity. I was listening to a tape of Thich Na(sp??help) & he said "You must know your ancestors". At the time I didn't even know who my grandparents were & didn't understand. Now I have names back to England/Ireland pre 17th century & Wow the world is a different great place
